Model OIC in Indonesia: A Project Coordinator's Journey Building Youth Leadership

As Project Coordinator for the Model OIC Diplomatic Simulation at Indonesian Computer University, I was thrilled to play a key role in creating a platform for young leaders to tackle pressing issues facing the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) by suggesting the theme “The Role of Youth Against Social Disparities”.  This simulation empowered participants to understand OIC mechanisms, hone their diplomacy skills, and propose solutions to challenges affecting youth across the OIC's member states.

Project Summary

The OIC faces a unique demographic situation, with young citizens comprising a significant portion of its member states' populations. To address concerns around education, employment, and personal development facing these youth, our Model OIC aimed to:

  • Increasing capacity for self-awareness in youth;
  • Build and enhance knowledge of selected participants on thematic and contemporary issues;
  • Provide opportunities for networking among youth;
  • Enhance participant abilities to actively engage across cultures.

Project Coordinator's Role

  • Leadership: Managed the project timeline, delegating tasks and ensuring our team achieved milestones.
  • Communication: Coordinated closely with UNIKOM faculty, external speakers, and student participants for smooth logistics.
  • Fundraising: Secured crucial sponsorship from PLN Indonesia, OIC Youth Indonesia, the UNIKOM Library, and Bank BJB, demonstrating broad support for our event.
  • Problem-solving: Securing a suitable venue for the Model OIC Simulation program proved to be a major challenge. Many government venues were unavailable due to COVID-19 restrictions and ongoing renovations. Additionally, the large auditorium on campus was also unavailable due to renovations.
  • Solution: I worked tirelessly to identify alternative venues on campus. I explored various options, considering factors such as capacity, accessibility, and audio-visual capabilities. After careful evaluation, I was able to secure a suitable location that met our needs.
  • Result: Despite initial setbacks, the Model OIC was held successfully on campus. The event provided a valuable learning experience for all participants, allowing them to engage in meaningful discussions and develop their diplomatic skills.

Logistics and Coordination

  • Venues: Worked with the UNIKOM campus to secure ideal locations for the opening ceremony, sessions, and closing events.
